2023 Elections: NBC threatens to revoke license of broadcast station heating up polity

The National Broadcasting Commission, NBC , on Thursday threatened to revoke the licence of any broadcasting station found heating up the polity before, during and after the 2023 general elections.

NBC Director General, Balarabe Ilelah stated this in Kano at one day capacity building workshop for Information Officers organized by Kano State Government in collaboration with the commission.

Ilelah said the stations should accord national interest and patriotism high premium and utmost attention in their broadcast.

According to him, “The issue of sanctioning, is not limited to fine as the commission is empowered to enforce. And so no broadcasting station should heat up the polity or heighten up tension.

“Every broadcast station should work in line with the Electoral Act,” he said.

The DG equally urged the Journalist to adhere to ethics guiding conduct of the profession.

SOLACEBASE reports that papers presented at the workshop include: Safety issues in elections coverage, Role of the media in election coverage conduct of elections in Nigeria and the role of global observers and NBC Act

On his part, Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje applauded the capacity building workshop noting that the training will go a long way to equip the media professionals to carry out their job diligently in the forthcoming elections.

Ganduje called on the media professionals to discharged their duties without taking sides but be fair and balance in their reportage.
