AANI mourns its pioneer member, ex-FCT minister, Jeremiah Useni
The Alumni Association of the National Institute (AANI), has mourned the passing of one of its most outstanding founding members and elder statesman, Lieutenant General Jeremiah Timbut Useni (rtd).
SolaceBase reports that the late Lieutenant General Useni (rtd) CFR mni, a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Senator of the Federal Republic, and Monitor General of Senior Executive Course (SEC) 3, 1981, passed away on Thursday, 23rd January 2025, at the age of 82 in Paris, France.
The association said indeed his shocking demise is a profound loss to not only his family but to the association, the good people of Plateau State, the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the entire nation and humanity.
This was contained in a statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary, Alumni Association of the National Institute (AANI), Brigadier General SK Usman (rtd), on Thursday.
The statement read in part, ‘’The President of the Alumni Association of the National Institute (AANI), Ambassador Emmanuel Obi Okafor mni, on behalf of the National Executive Council (NEC), National Executive Committee (EXCO), and the entire membership of AANI, deeply mourns the passing of one of our most outstanding founding members and elder statesman, Distinguished Senator, Lieutenant General Jeremiah Timbut Useni (rtd) CFR mni, Sardauna Plateau and Nasarawa.
It said as one of its founding members and one of AANI’s former National Presidents, Lieutenant General Useni (rtd) CFR mni’s contributions to the association, AANI, remain unparalleled.
‘’From 1994 to 1999, as President, he led it with vision and dedication, leaving a lasting legacy, including securing the association’s befitting National Secretariat in Maitama, Abuja, which also housed AMCON in Maitama, Abuja. His efforts exemplified an unflinching commitment to fostering the growth and influence of AANI in national affairs,’’ the statement said.
‘’The late Lieutenant General Useni (rtd) illustrious career in the Armed Forces of Nigeria and public service was marked by patriotism, courage and excellence. His service as Minister of Transport, Minister of the FCT, Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, Military Governor of the old Bendel State, and a member of the defunct Armed Forces Ruling Council demonstrated his steadfast commitment to national development, peace and security. He was also a former Deputy Chairman of the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) and a Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District, where he passionately advocated for the welfare of his people, the progress of Plateau State and national development.’’
‘’Known for his dedication to peace, unity, and harmonious coexistence, Lieutenant General Useni (rtd) CFR mni was a symbol of unity, integrity, compassion, and selfless service. His advocacy for peace on the Plateau and Nigeria earned him the respect and admiration of all.
‘’AANI recalls with fondness how, just last year, we celebrated General Useni’s 81st birthday at his residence. His warmth, generosity, and wisdom touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His loss is deeply felt by all members of the association and the nation at large.
‘’The entire membership of AANI stands in solidarity with his family during this difficult time. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones, the good people of Plateau State, the Nigerian military and the entire nation.
Therefore, as we mourn this irreplaceable loss, we pray that the Almighty God grants his family the strength to bear this painful departure and blesses the departed soul with eternal rest. Lieutenant General Useni (rtd) towering legacy will continue to inspire generations of Nigerians to serve with honour, dedication, and patriotism.
