Climate Change: ACReSAL plants over 2m trees, rehabilitates 106 km of shelterbelt in Kano
The Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project has planted over two million trees across rural areas of Kano State
Similarly, the project has rehabilitated 106 kilometres of shelterbelt, an essential barrier that protects the soil from desertification, wind erosion, and excessive sunlight.
According to Kano ACReSAL project coordinator, Dr. Dahir Muhammad Hashim, said specific achievements include the rehabilitation of the 4km by 24 belts of shelterbelt in Yan Bawa (Makoda LGA) and the 4 belts of 2.5km in Ginzo (Bagwai LGA).

‘’These shelterbelts are vital for maintaining soil fertility and combating land degradation,’’ Dahir added.
SolaceBase reports that Dr Dahir Hashim stated this on Monday during a media chat to highlight achievements in attaining the three million tree planting campaign launched in June 2024 by the state governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf.
He said the aim of planting three million trees across rural and urban areas of Kano state is to safeguard the environment.
‘’In addition, we established woodlot plantations in Dunawa and Sabon Ruwa (Makoda LGA), which provide sustainable firewood sources for local communities, thereby reducing the need for indiscriminate tree felling, ‘’the project coordinator of ACReSAL said.
‘’Furthermore, we have engaged in forest conservation and enrichment planting of Indigenous species in areas such as Daddarawa, Dajin Kura (Tsanyawa LGA), Dan Soshiya, Kyarana (Kiru LGA), and Gwarmai (Ghari LGA), to name a few.’’
‘’We are also proud to have developed a 100-hectare conventional orchard in Kyale (Gabasawa LGA) and established individual orchards for over 1,200 farmers in various local government areas. Our efforts to regenerate indigenous species have yielded the recovery of 41,087 trees, with over 59,900 beneficiaries positively impacted so far—a number we expect to grow once the final enumeration is completed.

Dr. Hashim said,’’ Our efforts have not gone unnoticed. The Kano ACReSAL project, under the leadership of His Excellency, was commended by the World Bank and the National Project Management Unit of ACReSAL for restoring 21,261 hectares of degraded land through afforestation efforts under the 3MTP initiative. This recognition affirms that we are on the right track in combating climate change and restoring Kano’s landscape.
He noted that for the sustainability of the tree planting and its ‘catch them young’ campaign to boost climate change resilience in the state, the project is planning to establish climate change clubs in at least one hundred secondary schools.
He noted that the club would soon be inaugurated to expose the secondary school students to the mechanism geared towards enhancing environmental resilience in the state.
The project coordinator appreciated the unrelenting commitments of the state governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf towards addressing environmental issues in the state.
He similarly, lauded the support of the World Bank and ACReSAL National headquarters.
