After SolaceBase report, FG includes AKTH in list of hospitals to grant dialysis subsidy of N12,000 to patients

The federal government has adjusted the list of tertiary hospitals to carry out a new subsidy scheme to ease the cost of dialysis for patients in Nigeria.

The government said it is a significant move to save lives, reduce both  physical and financial suffering, especially amongst vulnerable Nigerians

The price per dialysis session under the subsidy scheme is now N12,000 as against the previous N50,000.

Recall that in the initial list of participating institutions released in March by the federal government include the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Ebute-Metta Lagos, the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Jabi, Abuja, the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan, the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Owerri, and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) Maiduguri.

Others are the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Abeokuta, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) Lagos, the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Azare, University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) Benin, and University of Calabar Teaching (UCTH) Calabar.

The subsidy was launched in January at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi.

Similarly, in a post by presidential aides Sunday Dare and Daniel Bwala on Monday, the list was without any hospital from the northwest states, despite Jigawa State known to have one of the highest burdens of the disease in Nigeria.

However, after SolaceBase‘s report of the omission on Tuesday, the list was adjusted to include a federal tertiary hospital in the northwest, Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH).

In a statement issued on Wednesday, by Alaba Balogun, Deputy Director/Head, Information & Public Relations Federal Ministry of Health, said implementation of the pilot scheme is ongoing in the  following eleven (11nos.)  Federal Tertiary Health institutions across the geo-political zones of the country and, will be expanded in due time.

  1. University of Jos Teaching Hospital
  2. National Hospital, Abuja
  3. Federal Medical Centre, Ebute Metta
  4. University College Hospital, Ibadan
  5. University of Benin Teaching Hospital
  6. Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa
  7. Federal Teaching Hospital, Owerri
  8. Federal Medical Centre, Abakaliki

With this , it indicated that Lagos State that had two initially with Lagos State University Teaching Hospital and Federal Medical Centre, Ebute Metta, has been reduced to one with exclusion of with Lagos State University Teaching Hospital in the new list.

According to the statement , this Release is being issued to categorically state that the Federal Government has not excluded the Northwest states in the dialysis subsidy, contrary to claims in some media reports.

The Federal Government is committed to ensuring no Nigerian is left behind in accessing healthcare services across the country under its renewed hope agenda, as more Federal hospitals will be added in the safety net to widen access for the subsidized dialysis sessions.

This intervention is a deliberate initiative of the present administration to bring relief to patients with kidney-related diseases and expand access to Universal health coverage.
