Again, international passengers groan under severe heat at Kano Airport due to non-functional cooling system at newly built terminal

Exactly a week that SolaceBase reported the horrible situation of passengers at the new international terminal of Malam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) due to non-functioning air conditioners with severe heat under a weather condition of 43 degrees Celsius.

The situation has not changed since then as it is even worse at present.

Again for close to one hour on Thursday, there was no public electricity and the battery in the only functioning generator busted thereby personnel and passengers had it very rough.

SolaceBase reports that the new international terminal at the airport was commissioned on May 26, 2023, by President Muhammadu Buhari at a cost of over $500m.

It was a partnership between Nigeria and the Chinese government on built, operate and transfer.

Passengers who alighted from two international airlines, Saudi and Ethiopia Airlines were stranded as the Nigerian Immigration Service personnel could not screen their documents as the machines could not work without electricity.

Similarly, after the passengers of Ethiopia airline completed boarding the avion bridge by the aircraft could not be detached as there was no light to operate it.

A passenger heading to Saudi Arabia Maryam Yahaya in anger told SolaceBase that she detests flying from Kano, because the airport is not attended to compared to others like Abuja.

‘’I don’t like making international flights from Kano because of the horrible situation of the new international terminal in terms of functional facilities, hence I prefer to mostly fly from Abuja but my aged mother insisted on flying from Kano, ‘’Maryam Yahaya said.

SolaceBase gathered that the international terminal has two generators, with one due for service for over 8 months without attention and the other does not have a battery.

SolaceBase gathered that it all has to do with fraud, as each passenger is taxed  $200 on their tickets for infrastructural facilities at the terminal but the money was said not to be remitted to the Chinese partners by Nigeria.

Hence the Chinese counterparts are said to be feeling shortchange and disappointed in the arrangement.

When SolaceBase contacted FAAN media office in Kano, they said there is a standing instruction not to speak with the press but rather referred the reporter to the headquarters in Lagos.
