AGILE reveals measures to improve girls’ access to quality, safe education in Kano

The Kano State Ministry of Education, through the Adolescent Girls’ Initiative and Empowerment (AGILE) project, has engaged journalists to develop key messages on girls’ education and to inaudate them about the project’s objectives.

Solacebase reports that the media parley took place on Tuesday in Kano.

Speaking at the event, Ahmad Jibril, the acting deputy project coordinator for AGILE, emphasized that journalists are important partners and that it is crucial for them to understand the project’s goals and be informed of its successes since its inception.

He explained, “AGILE Project is a World Bank-supported initiative under Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Education, aiming to enhance secondary education opportunities for adolescent girls aged between 10 and 20. Implemented across various Nigerian states, including Kano, the project focuses on improving girls’ access to quality and safe education.”

He outlined the key components of the AGILE Project, which include: creating safe and accessible learning spaces by developing and upgrading school facilities; fostering an enabling environment for girls by implementing policies and programs that promote gender equality and protect girls from violence; and project management and system strengthening by enhancing the capacity of educational institutions and stakeholders.

In Kano State, the AGILE Project has identified and addressed specific challenges hindering girls’ education, such as school-related gender-based violence (SRGBV), an inadequate number of female teachers, and facilities that do not meet the needs of adolescent girls. To mitigate these challenges, the project is implementing measures that include the development of codes of conduct for teachers and students, capacity building through training for teachers and school staff, and infrastructure improvements such as renovating and upgrading school facilities, including the provision of gender-segregated sanitation facilities.

He urged journalists to reach out to the project coordinator if they identify any problems hindering the project’s implementation.

A resource person, Dr. Maude Rabiu Gwadabe, highlighted the role of journalists in promoting girl child education.

Gwadabe stated that journalists have crucial roles to play, such as “creating awareness and advocacy.” He emphasized the importance of girls’ child education.
