AKTH receives cardiothoracic equipment

The AGIP Nigerian exploration limited, in collaboration with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), has donated Cardiothoracic Machines, to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital,(AKTH) as part of its corporate social responsibility agenda, in providing support towards health care in Nigeria.

AGIP Managing Director, Mr. Chudi Illoh, while presenting the equipment on Thursday, said the donation was an avenue to tackle the menace of medical tourism overseas, as well as to provide advance treatment surgical services to the less privileged patients.

“The donation would improve patient management and reduce health complications and mortality,’’ the MD said.

Represented by the Head of Public Affairs Division of AGIP, Mr. Chris Ike said enhancing residency program and training of high quality manpower in the health sector, was their aim towards the kind gesture.

Responding, the Chief Medical Director of the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Professor Abdurrahman Abba Sheshe, commended the tremendous efforts of AGIP and NNPC in donating the life saving machines.

On the high rate of babies born with life threatening illnesses, he stated that, over three hundred (300) babies were born with congenital heart diseases yearly in Nigeria, and only forty percent (40%) have the privilege to travel overseas for treatment.

On his part, the representative of the Board Chairman, Dr. Adamu Alhassan, appreciated the donors and appealed to for more opportunities to the hospital, saying it will go a long way in reducing brain drain in the country at large.

After the commissioning and the handing over of the machines, to the management at the hospital main theater, a Cardiothoracic Surgeon from department of Surgery AKTH, Dr. Jameel Ismail Ahmad explained the functions of the newly commissioned machines to the public.
