ASUU disowns petition against Kano varsity governing council

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kano Zone, has distanced itself from a petition reportedly issued in its name by a group of lecturers at Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano (YUMSFUEK), demanding the immediate removal of the Chairman of the institution’s Governing Council.

The denial was contained in a statement by the Zonal Coordinator of ASUU Kano Zone, Prof. Abdulkadir Muhammad, on Saturday.

SolaceBase recalls that the petition, jointly signed by Dr. Bashir Ibrahim and five others, was addressed to the Minister of Education and also alleged that the Council was attempting to appoint a new Vice Chancellor without following due process.

However, ASUU Kano Zone clarified that YUMSFUEK is neither a chartered branch nor an observer of the union and therefore lacks the authority to issue a petition or press statement in ASUU’s name.

PROMISES-DELIVERED

The union emphasized that only a properly recognised branch of ASUU can speak on behalf of the union.

It added that while it supports adherence to due process in the appointment of vice chancellors in public universities, it is not involved in the affairs of YUMSFUEK as the institution has yet to attain observer status within ASUU.

“We want to emphasize and notify the general public and all relevant stakeholders that the petition is not from ASUU, but rather from a group of academics in YUMSFUEK,” the statement concluded
