An Open Letter to the General Public
Dear Fellow Citizens,
I write to address recent discussions surrounding the Tax Reform Bill and the role of Senator Barau I. Jibrin CFR, Deputy President of the Senate in this significant legislative process. It is essential to clarify that Senator Jibrin, is not the sponsor of the Tax Reform Bills.
However, his contribution to ensuring a thorough and informed approach to the bill deserves recognition.
Senator Jibrin, in his capacity as a distinguished senator and the Deputy President of the Senate, sitting as Chairman advocated for transparency and inclusiveness by requesting that tax professionals be allowed into the hallowed chambers. His intention was to ensure that these experts could clearly explain the importance and implications of the Tax Reform Bill to lawmakers before it was forwarded to the appropriate committee for further action.

This proactive step highlights Senator Barau’s commitment to an informed legislative process, one that takes into account expert opinions and equips lawmakers with the knowledge needed to deliberate effectively on behalf of the Nigerian people. By involving tax professionals at this early stage, Senator Barau demonstrated his dedication to fostering accountability and ensuring that every aspect of the bill is scrutinized with precision and care.
It is also vital to emphasize that the next steps in this process remain with the general public and the committee responsible for the bill. Public input, debate, and expert recommendations will shape the bill before any decision is made to adopt or reject it. This process reflects the principles of participatory democracy and underscores the importance of collaboration between the government and its citizens.
We, as Nigerians, must remain engaged and vigilant. It is our responsibility to follow this process, contribute our perspectives, and hold our representatives accountable. Tax reform has far-reaching implications for our economy and daily lives, and it is only through collective effort that we can achieve a system that benefits everyone.
