BUK appoints Haruna Aliyu as new Registrar

The Governing Council of the Bayero University Kano has approved the appointment of Malam (Dr) Haruna Aliyu as the 7th substantive Registrar and Secretary to the Council.

SolaceBase reports that a letter signed by the Chairman of the Governing Council, Dr Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, conveying the approval, said the appointment is for a period of five years with effect from Thursday, 22nd August, 2024.

“The Governing Council of Bayero University, Kano, in the exercise of the powers conferred on it by Section (4) of the University’s (Miscellaneous Provision) Amendment Act 2003 at its meeting and held on Thursday, 22 August 2024, considered the submission from the Selection Board and hereby approved your appointment as the Registrar of Bayero University, Kano for a period of Five (5) years with effect from Thursday, 22 August 2024,” the letter reads in part.

The Chairman, while congratulating the new Registrar equally prayed for a successful tenure of office.

It could be recalled that the former Registrar, Malam Jamil Ahmad Salim died on 23rd April 2023 after barely two years in office. Five candidates were selected and invited for the interview by the Selection Board.

They are; Haruna Aliyu, Bashir Abubakar, Mohammed Ibrahim Shiya, Musa Ajiya and Sambo Muhammad.

The new Registrar, Malam Haruna Aliyu was born on 16 August, 1976 at Yakasai Quarters in Kano Municipal.

He graduated in 2002 with a degree in Business Administration; and holds a Master of Banking and Finance as well as Masters in Business Management all from Bayero University. He was conferred with a Professional Doctorate in Administration by the Chartered I n st i t u t e o f Bu si n e ss M a n a g e rs a n d Administrators, United States of America.

Malam Haruna Aliyu joined the services of Bayero University in 2008 as an Administrative Officer and rose through the ranks to become Deputy Registrar in 2023.

While at Bayero University, he worked in various units and the Directorate.

He was a one-time University TETFUND Desk officer, Deputy Registrar Vice Chancellor’s Office and also served in numerous committees.

He previously served as Registrar at Skyline International University, Kano from April 2021 to May, 2023.

While at Skyline University, Aliyu led the University to Nigeria Team for the accreditation of 11 programmes; led and coordinated the University Team for participation in the 2021 Nigerian Universities Ranking, which placed Skyline University Nigeria as Number 16th out of 113th Nigerian Universities and number 8th out of 47th Private Universities participated in the NUC ranking system of Nigerian Universities.

He coordinated the successful review of the Curriculum in line with the BMAS, established the process of Admission through CAPS in line with JAMB policy, updated the curriculum in line with the BMAS provisions, as well as led the University Team for the NUC resource verification exercise.

After his national service, he had a short stint as a part-time lecturer at the Federal College of Education before joining the services of Northern Nigeria Flour Mills, Kano as an Account Officer from 2004 to 2007.

He later moved to Rumbu Sacks Nigeria Limited as a Finance Manager and served for only one year from 2007 to 2008 The new registrar is a member of various Associations including being a one-time Chairman of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), BUK; a Fellow, Association of Business Managers and Administrators of Nigeria; member Institute of Corporate Administration of Nigeria as well as member Association of Nigerian University Professional Administrators (ANUPA).

He is married with three children.
