BUK appoints Lamara Garba director public affairs, announces five new directorates

The Vice Chancellor, Bayero University Kano (BUK), Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, has confirmed the appointment of veteran journalist Lamara Garba as the substantive Director of the Public Affairs Directorate.

According to a statement in the special bulletin of the citadel of learning released on Thursday, the appointment is a significant development reflecting Bayero University Kano’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its administrative and communication frameworks.

SolaceBase reports that the appointment was confirmed in an official letter signed by the University’s Registrar, Malam Haruna Aliyu, on April 22, 2025.

The statement said Lamara Garba has been serving as Deputy Registrar in charge of the Directorate since 2021. This appointment is widely viewed as a logical and well-earned progression, considering his extensive experience and dedication to institutional service.

”With a solid background in journalism, public communication, and governance, Mr. Garba brings over 30 years of hands-on experience in strategic roles to the position,” the statement said.

Born in December 1966 in Azare, Katagum Local Government Area of Bauchi State, Lamara began his professional journey in 1993 as a Correspondent with the New Nigerian Newspapers, reporting on major events and developments across Kaduna, Bauchi, Kano, and Jigawa States.

His reporting style, rooted in accuracy and fairness, earned him respect in the media industry. He served as a two-term Chairman of the Kano State Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists. He later assumed critical positions at the national level, including Head of Strategic Communication at the Fiscal Responsibility Commission in the Presidency, Abuja, and Head of the Information Division at the National Examinations Council (NECO), Minna.

In 2015, Mr. Garba joined the services of Bayero University, Kano, where he has played a vital role in strengthening institutional communication, supporting university development initiatives, and promoting public awareness.

A graduate of BUK, he holds a B.A. and M.Sc. in Mass Communication, in addition to a Master’s in Development Studies. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Mass Communication at the same university.

As Director of Public Affairs, his role will include managing the university’s public communication strategy, overseeing media relations, and coordinating outreach efforts.

The Vice-Chancellor charged that his leadership is expected to bring renewed focus to how the university presents itself to the public and interacts with its various stakeholders.

Lamara Garba is a member of professional bodies, including the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), African Public Relations Association (APRA), Association of Communication Scholars and Practitioners of Nigeria (ACSPN), and ACCE, among others.

Along with Mr. Garba’s appointment, the Management has also announced several new leadership positions within the Registry and Bursary Departments.

These include Hajiya Halima Shehu Hayatu, appointed as Substantive Director of the Directorate of General Administration, responsible for overall institutional coordination and operational management.

Also, Hajiya Altine Maryam Ali, confirmed as Substantive Director, brings a strong background in administrative planning and policy execution.

Hajiya Anisatu Uwaisu Muhammad appointed Director, well-regarded for her organisational skills and focus on staff welfare and procedural improvement.

Similarly, Dr. Garba Abdullahi Barume, named Director, brings both academic experience and thoughtful administrative leadership to bear.

In the Bursary Department, two experienced professionals have been appointed to enhance financial oversight and accountability:

Malam Rabiu Ibrahim Maitafsiri, named Director of Final Accounts and Reporting/Budget, responsible for managing financial reports and supporting effective budgeting practices. Usman Gomina Ohikere, appointed Director of Revenue and External Assistance/Expenditure, overseeing income generation and managing financial planning.

These appointments reflect a concerted effort by the university to boost administrative effectiveness by engaging professionals with a proven record of service and leadership. The individuals selected are expected to work together to improve internal processes, advance service delivery, and support the long-term goals of the university.
