The Association of Female Congregation Members (ASFECOM), Bayero University, Kano (BUK), on Saturday organized a historic ‘Meet and Greet’ event aimed at celebrating the achievements and fostering unity among female staff members of the institution.

Speaking at the event, Local Organising Committee (LOC) Chairperson, ASFECOM, Professor Hassana Sani Darma, said the gathering was long overdue, considering that the association has existed for over two decades without a formal celebration of its members’ accomplishments.

She stated that, “This is the first time we are organizing such an event. In the past, we focused mainly on students, especially through orientation lectures for freshers.

“But today is about us—the women who form a strong part of BUK’s academic and administrative family. It’s time to celebrate ourselves,” she added.

Professor Darma noted that the diversity of BUK’s campuses—including the New Campus, Old Campus, School of Continuing Education, Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, and Mambayya House—has contributed to a disconnection among staff.

She explained that the event aimed to bridge that gap by bringing members together, strengthening networks, and fostering mentorship among new and long-serving staff.

Also speaking, Hajiya Halima Shehu Hayat, Director of General Administration in the Registry Department and one of the initiators of the event, said the idea started as a simple gesture to honor one of their members who was appointed Minister of State for Education.

It later evolved into a broader celebration recognizing many women holding key positions within the university.

“We realized that each of us deserved to be acknowledged. So we decided to expand the scope and present awards of excellence, appreciation, and honor to our members.

“It has been more than 14 years since we held a gathering like this. Today, not only are we reconnecting, we are also rejoicing,” she added.

According to the organizers, this is just the beginning, as more initiatives will follow to enhance collaboration and mentorship among female staff across all campuses.
