BUK VC urges religious groups to reassess Almajiri education system

The Vice-Chancellor, of Bayero University, Kano (BUK), Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, has urged religious groups to reassess the Almajiri education system.

This call was made during a courtesy visit by JIBWIS delegation to the Vice Chancellor last week.

Professor Abbas, while appreciating the delegation’s visit, described it as a reflection of the humility and commitment of JIBWIS leadership.

He called on religious leaders to leverage platforms like Friday sermons to enlighten their followers on the significance of acquiring both Western and religious education.

“Friday sermons offer a unique opportunity to propagate knowledge and encourage good character. It’s essential to integrate the pursuit of Western education with religious teachings for holistic development,” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor also assured that BUK remains committed to supporting indigent students by engaging philanthropists and corporate organizations to assist in paying their registration fees.

The delegation, led by Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir, National Chairman of the Ulama’u Council of JIBWIS, commended BUK for its exceptional support in hosting the National Qur’anic Recitation Competition.

Represented by Sheikh Abdulnasir Abdulmuhyi, Sheikh Jingir described the competition as a vital platform for promoting Islamic scholarship, unity, and Qur’anic memorization among participants from across Nigeria.

Speaking during the visit, Sheikh Abdulmuhyi emphasized the need for collaboration between academia and religious organizations in fostering both educational and spiritual development.

The Vice President of the Ulama’u Council, Sheikh Yusuf Sambo Rigacikum, also lauded the vision of Northern Nigeria’s founding fathers, highlighting the legacy of naming universities after notable figures and urging the younger generation to emulate such impactful contributions.

The JIBWIS delegation further sought BUK’s expertise in establishing the proposed Fortune University in Jos, citing the institution’s reputation for academic excellence and professional resources.
