CCIJ unveils ElectionWatch, an AI tool to strengthen election accountability

The Center for Collaborative Investigative Journalism (CCIJ) has launched ElectionWatch, an innovative AI-powered tool designed to help journalists, researchers, and civic groups detect and combat election-related misinformation across social media platforms.

The new tool, developed with the backing of Google’s Journalism AI Challenge, combines data analysis, AI-assisted monitoring, and collaborative workflows to support investigative reporting, fact-checking, and accountability journalism.

This was made known by Executive Director of CCIJ, Jeff Kelly Lowenstein, on Thursday.

He explained that ElectionWatch aims to assist journalists in identifying misinformation narratives, actors, and networks, which often thrive during election periods, threatening public trust in democratic processes.

By offering powerful, AI-driven capabilities, the platform helps users spot these harmful patterns swiftly and accurately—particularly during the high-pressure cycles of election reporting.

“Elections are crucial to democracy, but also periods when misinformation spreads rapidly, undermining public trust,” Lowenstein said. “ElectionWatch is about providing journalists and watchdogs with an ethical AI tool that enables them to identify patterns quickly and work collaboratively across newsrooms.”

SolaceBase reports that the tool was specifically designed with transparency and responsible AI use in mind, ensuring it meets the high ethical standards necessary for newsrooms.

CCIJ’s Product Manager, Nelly Kalu, explained the tool’s relevance to the challenges journalists face during elections. “We created this tool to address the gaps we encountered while investigating Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election. Journalists need speed, accuracy, and context under pressure, without compromising ethics. ElectionWatch is built to integrate seamlessly into newsroom workflows and support collaborative investigations, especially in the Global South.”

To introduce ElectionWatch to the global media community, CCIJ will offer virtual demonstrations, newsroom training, and partnerships with journalistic and civic technology organizations.

Early adopters include investigative newsrooms, fact-checking groups, and election observers, particularly in Africa.

This launch marks a significant step in CCIJ’s broader mission to develop tools that enhance investigative journalism and strengthen democratic participation worldwide.
