CMD decries scarcity of materials required for diagnosis of neurological disorders

The Chief Medical Director (CMD), Aminu Kano teaching hospital (AKTH) Prof. Abba Sheshe has decried inadequate materials required for diagnosis of neurological disorders.

The medical expert lamented the situation at a Public Lecture organized by the Africa Center of Excellence for Population Health and Policy (ACEPHAP), Bayero University Kano, BUK held on Friday in Kano.

SOLACEBASE reports that the public lecture was titled ”Awareness on Common Neurological Disorders.”

Prof. Abba Sheshe said that neurological disorders and diseases are very difficult to treat, because of the traditional believe that neurological disorders are caused by demons, noting that creating awareness about the problem is very relevant and important.

Speaking further on the challenges, he said  Kano has only two electroencephalogram, EEG machine that helps to records the electrical activity of the brain, and the two machine serve Katsina, Jigawa, Bauchi, Sokoto and Kaduna states.

In a remark, a Consultant Neurologist from United Kingdom,  Prof. Abdallah Shehu gave a detailed explanation on common neurological disorders, as well as recommendations on how to treat and prevent them.

“On any regular day, you’re bound to run into problems. Some of them are more common than others, like traffic, forgetting to do something, and stress. In the sphere of neurological disorders that negatively affect the nervous system (brain, spinal cord, & nerves) some are very rare and others are common.”

“One of these is known as dementia, this is a group of symptoms that point to a decline in a person’s mental ability, such that it interferes with their normal daily life and function, People with dementia experience memory loss, problems reasoning, and many other issues.”

“Epilepsy is also another common neurological disorder, where the electrical activity of the brain is abnormal, resulting in recurrent seizures.”

“And also stroke is another common neurological disorder, is a situation where the blood supply to the brain is severely or entirely diminished, the blood carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain.”

On his part, the Vice Chancellor, Bayero University Kano, Prof. Adamu Sagir Abbas represented by Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mahmud Umar Sani, said (ACEPHAP) is one of the centers of excellence of the institution and the university is very proud of the achievement of the center.

“The university is an institution that actually has the responsibility of doing research, educating people and also to get information that help policy makers.”

“Bayero University Kano is known for collaborating with universities and other institutions in conducting research and other activities that helps the public to solve problems that affect humanity.”

At the event,  Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, represented by Director General, Kano State Hospitals Management Board, Dr. Nasiru Alhasan Kabo, donated 10 million to ACEPHAP.
