CODE unveils $5m grant for AI reporting initiative

A Civil Society Organisation, Connected Development (CODE), has unveiled a $5 million media grant to support AI-driven reporting in Nigeria.

Themed, ‘Exploring new media opportunities to accelerate development’, the initiative was launched on Tuesday at a media dialogue held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.

CODE’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Hamzat Lawal, said the organisation recognises the transformative role of AI in governance, public service delivery, and accountability.

However, he emphasised the need for journalists to critically engage with the technology, understanding both its potential and its risks.

“We have all seen the revolutionary power of new media, whether it is in addressing poverty, expanding access to information and its dissemination, or promoting efficiency and openness in the public and private sectors,” the CEO said.

“However, like with any new technology, citizens must grasp the advantages and disadvantages of AI-driven technologies in order to ensure their responsible use.”

The organisation said the five-year grant will provide financial support and capacity-building for journalists investigating AI’s impact on Nigeria’s development.

According to CODE, the initiative will focus on ethical AI use, addressing concerns such as algorithmic bias, data privacy risks, and unequal access to public services.

Lawal said the fund aligns with CODE’s mission to empower citizens and promote AI-driven solutions that serve the public interest through transparency and inclusion.

He added that the initiative will prioritise AI’s role in enhancing key sectors, including health, education, water sanitation and hygiene (WASH), as well as governance and accountability.
