Court convicts two for illegal tree felling in Kano

The Kano State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has secured another major victory in the enforcement of environmental protection laws, as a Magistrate Court 2 sitting at Normasland, in the metropolis, convicted two individuals, Salihu Mukhtar and one other, for conspiracy and illegal tree felling along Jigawa Road, Nasarawa GRA.


The prosecuting Counsel, Barrister Bahijjah H. Aliyu, presented evidence showing that the defendants conspired to fell a tree without authorization from the Ministry, an act that violated both the Kano State Penal Code and the Forestry Laws of Kano State.


SolaceBase had reported that a Magistrate Court sitting at Rijiyar Zaki in Kano State in April 2025 sentenced Alhaji Inuwa Ayuba to two months imprisonment for the illegal felling of seven neem trees in Sarauniya village, Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area.


The court also gave the convict, Ayuba, the option of a fine.

In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered Ayuba to plant 14 neem trees as part of his penalty.

KANO ACRESAL PROJECT

A statement issued by the ministry on Saturday said the ruling on the matter, the Magistrate, Auwalu Yusuf, found the defendants guilty of conspiracy and sentenced them to three months imprisonment or a fine of ₦20,000 each.


Also, for illegal tree felling, the duo were jailed for six months or a fine of ₦50,000 each.


Applauding the judgment, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru M. Hashim, reiterated the Ministry’s zero-tolerance policy on illegal logging and urged the public to support tree preservation efforts.

“Trees are not just decoration; they are critical to the air we breathe, the climate we live in, and the future we are trying to secure,” Dr. Hashim stated. “Let this conviction be a lesson: anyone who damages our environment will face the full force of the law.”
