Court remands 3 over alleged murder of housewife, 6 children in Kano

A Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Kano on Thursday ordered the remand of three men over the alleged murder of a housewife, Fatima Abubakar, 35, and her six children at Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters in Kano.

The defendants are: Umar Auwalu, 23, of Sabuwar Gandu Quarters; Isyaku Yakubu, 40, of Sagagi Quarters; and Yakubu Abdulaziz, 21, of Sabon Gida Sharada Quarters.

The defendants are standing trial on an eight-count charge bordering on conspiracy, criminal trespass, robbery, culpable homicide, rape, mischief by fire, possession of dangerous weapons and inflicting injuries.

The Prosecutor and Attorney General of Kano State, Mr Abdulkarim Maude, SAN, told the court that the defendants allegedly committed the offences on Jan. 17, 2026, at Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters.

Maude alleged that Umar, a nephew of the deceased, conspired with the other defendants and trespassed into the deceased’s residence.

The prosecutor further alleged that the defendants had earlier attacked, robbed, killed and burnt two housewives at Tudun Yola Quarters in November 2025.

Similarly, the court ordered the remand of Umar Ali, who allegedly collected the eyes of a nine-year-old girl, which was said to have been removed by the first defendant, Umar, after raping her.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.

According to him, the offences contravene Sections 97, 221, 283, 298, 319, 336 and 348 of the Penal Code.

Defence Counsel, Mr A. S. Tunkuye, made an application pursuant to Section 36(5)(c), seeking an order directing the Attorney General to provide facilities and records of the case diary to enable him prepare his defence.

The Chief Magistrate, Auwal Yusuf-Suleiman, ordered the remand of the defendants in a correctional facility and directed the prosecution to provide the defence with all necessary facilities.

Yusuf-Suleiman adjourned the case until March 11, 2026, for further mention. (NAN)
