Crisis: AKTH workers threaten strike

Crisis is brewing at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) Branch, Kano, as health workers under the auspices of Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) have threatened to embark on strike failure of the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Abdulrahman Abba Sheshe to meet their demands.

This was contained in a letter titled “Notice of 15-Day Ultimatum For Strike Action’’ addressed to the hospital Chief Medical Director.

SOLACEBASE reports that the letter was jointly signed by Branch Chairmen, MHWUN, NANNM, NUAHP, JOHESU and Secretary, Abdulrahman Aminu, Bashir Ali Ado, Dayyabu Mukhtar, Murtala Isa Umar and Abdulrahman Aminu respectively.

The workers stated in the letter that the strike threat became a last option after several letters calling for attention on their demands which were ignored by the Chief Medical Director and is inimical to harmonious working relationship and good health care service delivery.

The workers stated that their demands include abuse of public private partnership policy through selling of hospital units and Service Centres to private enterprise which is making access to healthcare services by majority of patients impossible due to the high cost, conversion of workers with additional qualifications which the CMD, according to the letter had promised to addressee but failed severally and flouting federal government circulars, this the workers said the CMD has refused to implement a circular (HCSF/CSO/HRM/ 1274/T3 dated 11th September, 2020) for Pharmacist Consultant Carde, 2 years after it was issued despite clear approval and directive to implement it by the AKTH Board of Management.

The letter said others are, “Arbitrary price increase for hospital services, Scarcity of drugs and other hospital consumables and high-handedness to staff and witch-hunting of union leaders.’’

According to the letter, the aforementioned demands and others have led to the workers to lose confidence in the leadership style of the CMD and has being creating disharmony which has never existed in the history of the hospital.

Thereby the workers threatened to embarked on industrial action at the expiration of the ultimatum by 12 midnight of 21st October, 2022.
