Dala Tennis Championship closes 38th edition as winners cash out prizes

The 38th edition of the Dala Hardcourt Tennis Championship concluded over the weekend in Kano, with outstanding performances and remarkable victories as top players carted home major prizes.

Abua Canice emerged as the men’s singles champion, winning the coveted title and earning ₦1.1 million. In the women’s doubles category, Khadija Muhammad led her team to victory, claiming a cash prize of ₦660,000.

Speaking at closing events, Chairman of the Dala Organising Committee, Bashari Mohammed Gumel, described the successful completion of the 2025 tournament as “a privilege,” especially in light of the economic challenges facing the country.

Gumel also led participants in mourning the death of prominent figures in Nigerian tennis and community development, including the late President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF), Engr. Ifedayo Akindoju, Alhaji Abubakar Fana, Abdulaziz Auwalu, and Alhaji Mohammed Gana. He prayed for Allah’s mercy upon their souls and strength for their families.

The Chairman expressed deep appreciation to sponsors whose contributions have sustained the championship for nearly four decades.

He acknowledged the long-standing partnership of First Bank of Nigeria Plc, and recognized the invaluable support of individuals and organisations who have kept the tournament alive. Special mention was made of the Tropical General Investment (TGI) Group for its sponsorship in 2025, as well as the personal contribution of Alhaji Farouk Mohammed Gumel.

While reiterating that the Dala Tennis Championship remains the premier tennis event in Northern Nigeria, Gumel expressed confidence that the tournament will continue to thrive with the support of partners and stakeholders.

He commended all participants for their discipline and sportsmanship, and appreciated the efforts of the Kano Club management, the Organising Committee, officials, referees, ball boys, and the press for their professionalism.

SolaceBase reports that the 2025 championship, which commenced on November 21, featured a rigorous preliminary stage in which eight players qualified for the main draw. The main matches progressed from Monday through Saturday, delivering high-intensity contests across all categories.

Abua was the standout player of the tournament. He teamed up with Musa in the men’s doubles final, securing a convincing victory to lift the doubles title. Returning to the court the next day, Abua delivered another stellar performance in the men’s singles final, defeating Danjuma in straight sets 6–2, 6–3.

With powerful serves, sharp baseline shots, and unwavering consistency, Abua dominated the match from start to finish. His back-to-back victories within 24 hours – clinching both the doubles and singles titles – mark one of the most impressive achievements of the 38th Dala Hardcourt Tennis Championship.
