Death toll in Bauchi stampede rises to 7

This was confirmed to journalists by the Bauchi State police command saying, “The recorded number of people who died during the distribution of Zakat by a Bauchi-based philanthropist and Chairman of the AYM Shafa group of companies, Alhaji Yakubu Maishanu after a stampede on Sunday has risen to seven”

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO of the command, SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, giving the update became necessary from the information gotten from the medical doctor.

SOLACEBASE reports that he listed the deceased to include, “Aisha Usman ‘f’ aged 13 years of Gwang Gwang Gwang, Sahura Abubakar ‘f’ aged 55 years of Anguwan, Aisha Ibrahim Abubakar ‘f’ aged 43 years of Kobi Street, Khadija Isah  ‘f’ aged 8 years of Karofi, Maryam Suleiman ‘f’ aged 20 years of Kandahar, Maryam Shuibu ‘f’ aged 16 years Gwang Gwan Gwan, Hassana Saidu ‘f’ aged 53 years of Dutsen Tanshi all of Bauchi metropolis.

“Recall that the Command had earlier on Sunday said they had received a distress call about the tragedy in which the state police commissioner, Auwal Musa Mohammed immediately directed urgent action for the mobilization of personnel to the scene for action.”

He submitted that on getting to the scene, the police operatives joined in the rescue operations and cordoned off the area to prevent further casualties while the exercise was stopped.

The PPRO said the victims who were unconscious were rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital Bauchi, after which a medical doctor confirmed that four were dead adding that others including a 17-year-old girl are currently receiving treatment at the hospital.

He equally, added that the command frowns at such development which puts the lives of people at risk considering the present economic situation in the country.

However, it was gathered that other sources including eyewitnesses said 13 deceased were buried as at today.
