Debt of Gratitude: Honoring the mentor who shaped my journey

By Ismail Auwal

The recent appointment of Comrade Nura Iro Ma’aji as a Commissioner in the Kano State Government is a momentous occasion not only for him but also for those of us who have had the privilege of learning from his leadership. For me, this appointment is a testament to the profound impact Comrade Ma’aji has had in shaping not only my career but the lives of countless young leaders in Kano and beyond.

I first crossed paths with Comrade Ma’aji at a civil society gathering at the American Corner in the Kano State Library, an event that would forever change the course of my professional life.

At the time, I was an aspiring young leader with big dreams but limited direction. Comrade Ma’aji’s words at that gathering were transformative—his advocacy for transparency, good governance, and ethical leadership resonated deeply with me. That day marked the beginning of a mentorship that would guide me through some of the most significant milestones of my career.

Comrade Ma’aji saw potential in me when I could barely see it in myself. He pushed me to take on the challenge of becoming the first thematic lead for Anti-corruption in the Open Governance Partnership in Kano.

It was a daunting role, but under his guidance, I not only embraced it but excelled. His mentorship was far more than advice—it was a commitment to ensuring my growth. He helped me refine my proposal writing skills, offering invaluable feedback that ultimately led to my winning two prestigious international grants, a feat I could have never achieved without his unwavering support.

His impact, however, extends beyond my own achievements. Comrade Ma’aji has mentored countless young people, guiding them to become ethical, competent, and socially conscious leaders. His approach to mentorship—rooted in integrity, compassion, and a deep commitment to public service—has fostered an entire generation of changemakers.

Comrade Ma’aji’s expertise in governance, policy development, and community engagement is unparalleled. His work with institutions like the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) and the World Bank/Nigeria Interfaith Action Association (NIFAA) has shaped the landscape of Nigerian civil society and inspired tangible social change.

His ability to bring diverse stakeholders together, combined with his steadfast commitment to accountability and transparency, promises a bright future for the state.

In honoring Comrade Ma’aji today, I also express a debt of gratitude. He has shaped my journey, inspired my passion for public service, and instilled in me the values of leadership and integrity. His unwavering belief in me continues to fuel my work, and for that, I am forever grateful.
