2023: Denying opposition access to public places for campaigns is recipe for violence – Kawu Sumaila

A New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Senatorial Candidate, AbdurRahman Kawu Sumaila, has said that the attitudes of ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) led governments denying opposition parties usages of Public Places for campaigns, is nothing but calls to unstable Politicking.

SOLACEBASE reports AbdurRahman Kawu Sumaila, a former House of Representatives, Chief Whip, who was speaking at a Kano State Peace Summit, organized by the Nigeria Police Force, Kano Command in collaboration with AMG Foundation, on Tuesday, said on several occasions, as opposition in Kano, they tried using public places for their campaigns but they were always denied.

He said, “sometimes last week we were at Rano Local Government campaigning, and we just placed our Banners on a common Street lights, but before we know it, they were removed with a warning never to even try doing that again”.

Sumaila said that the problems this election is facing is the fact that some politicians are placed above others as they do and said what they wants throwing caution to the wind and nothing happening to them.

“Not until the security agents and the election umpire allow a true level playing ground and act quickly against anybody who violates the law no matter his class or positions, then we will agree that the conduct would be free, fair and just”.

The State Police Commissioner, Mamman Dauda, explained that they organized the summit to sensitized the political stakeholders against violence and hate speeches which create uncertainty in the State.

Dauda, notes that they brought politicians, Ullamas and Civil Societies Organisations to remind them of the provisions of the Electoral Laws, which specifically guides against hate speeches, violent campaigns and allowing  for a level playing ground and doing things accordingly.

On his part, Kano Civil Societies Forum Chairman, Ibrahim A. Waiya, urged the Nigeria Police to be fair by ensuring that anybody who makes unguided statements and hate speeches is arrested and prosecuted accordingly.

“We have seen so many bigwigs in the political cycle making unremarkable, unguided and hate speeches, but up till this movements we have not seen or heard of any arrest, this is not good for the conduct of the Police, you must been seen doing your job without fear or favour”.

In a remark, the Founder of the Aminu Magashi Foundation, Dr. Aminu Magashi said that the initiative was aimed at ensuring a credible and violence-free elections in 2023.

He urged all political parties and other stakeholders to use the avenue in fine-tuning modalities of ensuring credible elections.

Also speaking, Deputy Imam Alfurkan Jumu’at Mosque in Kano, Sheikh Abdulwahab Abdallah urged the Nigeria Police to ensure that any politician indulging youths in drug abuse so that they can engage them for political violence should be arrested and dealt with.
