Despite varsity workers strike nationwide, academic activities not disrupted in BUK
The strike action by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of non-teaching staff unions in universities appears largely ineffective at Bayero University, Kano (BUK), as facilities expected to be shut down remain operational, continuing regular activities.
SolaceBase reporter visited the university on Monday to observe the strike’s progress and found that locations such as the main library, where students were actively studying, and the university hospital, with doctors attending to patients, were still open.

It can be recalled that the JAC, comprising the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), issued a circular on Sunday, directing a nationwide strike over some demands yet to be attended to by the federal government, effective from today, Monday.
The statement was signed by Mr Peters Adeyemi, General Secretary of NASU, and Mr. Muhammad Ibrahim, President of SSANU.
The announcement led to expectations that the strike would disrupt university activities significantly.
However, campus activities continue, with some students even sitting for exams in various faculties at BUK on Monday.

Commenting on the situation, Malam Nura Garba, SSANU Secretary,BUK Branch, clarified that the strike involves only NASU and SSANU members, affecting administrative, hospital, and library operations. Nonetheless, these facilities remain open.

Explaining the ongoing activities, NASU Chairman Abdullahi Nasiru attributed the delayed shutdown to a late directive issued on Sunday, saying, “We are holding a meeting today, and the facilities that are currently open will soon be shut down.”

He added that although the union had previously announced its intention to strike, they had to wait for formal instructions from the national headquarters. “But our strike is total, comprehensive, and indefinite,” he affirmed.
Also, students, who spoke to our reporter, recounted accessing the hospital and the university’s main library without any hindrance despite the said strike.
