Elder statesman, Tanko Yakasai distances self from any political affiliation

An elder statesman, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, has distanced himself from any political affiliation or group, stating that his focus is now firmly on initiatives that will drive Nigeria’s progress and national development.

Speaking to journalists in Kano on Wednesday, Yakasai made it clear that at his stage in life, he is more concerned with the future of the country than with partisan politics.

“I am not a member of any political group or organization. My interest is now centered on promoting ideas and initiatives that will move our country forward,” he said during the interview.

SolaceBase reports that Yakasai’s remarks come amid increasing political realignments ahead of 2027 elections, with many political figures seeking endorsements from elder statesmen and influential voices

However, the respected statesman was categorical in clarifying that he no longer plays partisan roles.

Alhaji Tanko Yakasai is a veteran Nigerian politician, statesman, and nationalist who has played a prominent role in the country’s political development for over six decades.

He was a commissioner in Kano State under the military regime of Audu Bako as the state governor.

Alhaji Yakasai was also, Special Assistant on National Assembly Liaison to President Shehu Shagari during the Second Republic and a founding member of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF).

He was a close associate of Nigeria’s first republic leaders and served in various national capacities, including as Special Adviser on National Assembly Matters to President Shehu Shagari in the Second Republic.

Known for his outspoken views and commitment to democratic values, Yakasai has been a consistent advocate for unity, good governance, and national development.

Over the years, he has remained a vocal figure on issues affecting Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly concerning constitutional reforms, democracy, and inclusivity.
