Emir Sanusi calls for stronger collaboration between LG chairmen, district heads
The 16th Fulani Emir of Kano, Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II, has called for stronger collaboration between Local Government Chairmen and District Heads, saying closer synergy between the two institutions is essential for accelerating grassroots development across Kano State.
SolaceBase reports that the call was contained in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Aminu Bello Sani, following the opening of a three-day capacity-building seminar organised by the ministry in partnership with ANHI Consultants International Limited in Kaduna.
Speaking while declaring the seminar open on Saturday, the Emir said Local Government Chairmen and District Heads play distinct but complementary roles in governance, stressing that effective cooperation between them would enhance development at the grassroots.
He explained that while Local Government Chairmen are political leaders responsible for implementing government policies and programmes, District Heads serve as custodians of religion, culture and tradition.

“The two institutions must work together with mutual respect and understanding if we are to achieve meaningful and sustainable development at the grassroots,” the Emir said.
Sanusi also commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for executing what he described as laudable projects aimed at improving the lives of people across the state’s communities.
He further directed District Heads to support government policies and programmes to ensure the overall development of society.
The seminar, themed “Anti-Corruption, Good Governance, Leadership and Ethical Values,” brought together the 44 Local Government Chairmen and 56 District Heads from across Kano State.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Mohammed Tajo Othman, described the gathering as historic, saying the programme was designed to strengthen leadership capacity, promote accountability, reinforce ethical values and improve service delivery at the grassroots.
He disclosed that the ministry plans to extend similar capacity-building programmes to newly appointed District Heads, as well as Village and Ward Heads across the state.
According to the commissioner, the knowledge and experience participants would gain during the seminar are expected to strengthen institutions, improve service delivery and enhance grassroots governance.
“The progress recorded at the grassroots reflects the commitment of His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, to ensuring that development is not concentrated in urban centres alone, but reaches every Local Government Area of Kano State,” Othman said.
He also appreciated the Emir of Kano for honouring the invitation and declaring the seminar open despite his busy schedule.
