Emirate Crisis: Emirs Aminu, Sanusi set for parallel hawan sallah
Kano State is set for a contentious Eid-el-Fitr celebration, as both Emir Aminu Ado Bayero and Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II have separately announced plans to conduct Hawan Sallah, a key traditional event marking the end of Ramadan.
SolaceBase reports that the development comes amid the ongoing Kano Emirate crisis, with the state divided between the two royal figures.
Emir Aminu Ado Bayero, the 15th Emir of Kano, formally notified security agencies including the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, the Department of State Services, and the Kano Police Command of his planned Hawan Sallah, Hawan Daushe, and Hawan Nassarawa celebrations.
In letters dated March 1, 2025, addressed to these security agencies, the Private Secretary to Emir Aminu Ado Bayero, Abdullahi Haruna Kwaru, outlined the scheduled traditional Sallah celebrations on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd of Shawwal 1446 AH, with an additional cultural event on the fourth day.

The notifications, stamped and received by security agencies, confirm their awareness and readiness to ensure a peaceful and orderly celebration.
Meanwhile, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, who was reinstated by the Kano State Government under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, has also announced his plans to lead Hawan Sallah.

In a letter dated March 21, 2025, addressed to district heads and traditional titleholders, Dan Makwayon Kano, Alhaji Abba Yusuf, conveyed Emir Sanusi’s directive for them to prepare for Hawan Sallah with their entourage.
Additionally, Governor Yusuf directed the Kano Emirate under Sanusi’s leadership to organize the event, as stated in an official statement released on March 18, 2025, and signed by spokesperson to the governor Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa,
The statement noted that the governor gave the directive during an Iftar (Ramadan fast-breaking) with the Emirs at the Government House.
For Emir Aminu Ado Bayero, this year’s Sallah festivities hold extra significance, as it marks the fifth anniversary of his ascension to the throne.
However, with both Emirs laying claim to the event, Kano is poised for a historic standoff, as the traditional procession may witness competing gatherings under different royal camps.
