Environmental Challenges: ACReSAL decries activities of sand miners in Kano

Kano State Project Coordinator, Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes, (ACReSAL), Dr. Dahir Muhammad Hashim has urged sand miners in the Yansabo community of Tofa LGA of the state to desist from the act due to its negative impact on the environment.

SOLACEBASE reports that Hasim stated this on Wednesday when he visited the community during a routine sensitization on good environmental practices, the effect of climate change, and an update on the project plan towards delivering its mandate in the area.

A statement issued by Kano ACReSAL Communication Officer, Maryam Abdulqadir, quoted Dr. Dahir as saying, ‘’that human activities have been identified as major contributing factor to climate change unless communities actively participate in the struggle for the deliverance of the environment from the effect of climate change through environment-friendly activities like planting more trees, minimizing carbon emissions, replacing fossil fuels to an alternative environmentally friendly source of energy and so on, the general well being of the environment would continue to be endangered.’’

‘’As a medical doctor, the Project Coordinator shared his conviction with the community over the fact that the root cause of so many ailments is attributable to the poor quality of the environment, and the effect goes beyond human health as it also puts the social and economic status into comatose,’’ the statement said.

According to the statement, ACReSAL is a well-designed project that seeks to address the general environmental challenges taking into account the trade-ups that is in the struggle and therefore capturing a detailed plan to improve the livelihood of the affected communities, especially women, youth, and the vulnerable member of the communities.

‘’Following up on a complaint by the leadership of the community during the sensitization, Dr. Dahir Hashim upon visiting the site reported to have been under threats due to sand mining, which happened to be within the project catchment, decried the situation and ordered for immediate suspension of the activity, pending investigation of the matter by the relevant authorities.’’
