By Abdullahi Muhammad

The Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) is to plant more than ten million trees across Kano State in the next four years.

Kano State ACReSAL Project  Coordinator, Dr Dahir Muhammad Hashim disclosed this in an interview with a local Radio Station over the weekend monitored by SOLACEBASE in Kano.

Hashim said that the measure is aimed at curtailing desertification and mitigating the effects of climate change.

According to him, it is also expected that this will enhance soil fertility and reduce evapotranspiration rates.

‘’In the process, 2.5m trees would be planted annually beginning from this year. The tree planting would also be conducted in collaboration with Civil Society Organisations and other sister agencies,’’ Hashim said.

The trees he added, are to be planted across the nooks and crannies of the state including major metropolitan roads with a view to enhancing air quality.

He assured that unlike previous failed moves to check deforestation, there is an absolute commitment from all players to achieve the set target.

‘’The scheme which is a tripartite initiative of the World Bank, Federal Government of Nigeria and Governments of nineteen Northern states is also working to make available fuel-efficient cooking stoves to check indiscriminate felling of trees for firewood.’’

”There is also a plan to designate a woodlot where loggers would be confined to, ”the PC said.

Dr Hashim equally announced measures to boost food production through irrigation and smart agricultural techniques.

‘’Part of this is the construction of a mini dam at ‘Yan Sabo in Tofa Local Government Area which already created direct opportunities to over two thousand farmers.’’

Also being checked by ACReSAL in Kano is uncontrolled sand mining that threatens the lives and the environment while on the other hand contributing to addressing causative factors associated with flooding such as environmental sanitation especially desilting of drainages which Dr Hashim believes helped in preventing the menace during the 2023 raining season.

To sustain the tempo, cleaning and refuse evacuation tools have been procured and distributed to self-help groups who are to take over the exercise initiated by the scheme.
