Euro 2024: Turkiye defeat Austria 2-1 to reach quarterfinals

Turkiye qualified for the quarterfinals of the European Championship for the first time since 2008 with a 2-1 win over Austria late Tuesday.

Merih Demiral, put the Turks ahead in less than one minute with a header, and doubled the lead in the 59th minute with another header.

Both teams created chances but couldn’t find a goal, as the game got intense.

Austria then found the net through Michael Gregoritsch with a header in the 66th minute from yet another corner kick.

During the late period of the game, Turkiye goalkeeper Mert Günok was at his elastic best as he dived to push away Christoph Baumgartner’s poewerful header which could have tied the game.

Turkiye will now play Netherlands in the quartfinals on Saturday.
