EXCLUSIVE: Custodial staff, drug dealer intercepted with 4.5kg marijuana, 8 mobile phones in Kano prison
Nigeria Correctional Service, Kano Command has intercepted 6 parcels of marijuana, weighing 4.5kg and 8 mobile phones about to be smuggled into the facility for an inmate on death row, Huzaifa.
Also, one of the facility staff and an illicit drug dealer have been arrested and handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.
A source at the Kurmawa correctional centre in Kano behind the Emir’s palace told Solacebase that on Thursday, a staff of the custodial centre not aware that he was under surveillance met an illicit drug dealer who brought the items with android phones for inmates on death row.
‘’The young staff employed about two years ago, Aminu Ibrahim met the drug dealer, close to Gidan Makama and collected all the items with the drugs and each of the phones having name tags so that there will not be a mix-up,’’ said the source.
However, angered by the seizure, the inmates who were to receive the items became restive, requesting that the impounded items be released to them immediately and the smugglers arrested to be freed.
The source noted that the leader of the inmates on the death roll, complaint to the custodial centre authority that without the release of their confiscated items, there will be no peace in the facility.
‘’You see the in-charge of the custodial centre was transferred here about three weeks ago from Wudil to serve to relieve duty since the officer in charge is attending a two-month course.’’
‘’On his assumption of duty, he realized that discipline has degenerated in the facility completely to the extent that some staff are conniving with inmate especially those in the condemned cells to smuggle in phones and prohibited items.’’
‘’With his knowledge of the facility since he had worked here himself for over 15 years was now able to create surveillance and monitoring activities which inmates on death roll detest. That was why they created pandemonium on Thursday evening .’’
With the experience of the in-charge now and most of the staff, they were able to control the pandemonium without recording any death from inmates or staff, neither was there destruction of government property.
‘’As I speak with you now, an investigation is ongoing to know and fish out those colluding with inmates and the prohibited items.
