A fire outbreak on the ninth floor of the North-West University Kano city campus on Thursday led to the hospitalization of a staff member.
The blaze, which primarily affected the offices of the Head of Department and lecturers in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) department, was reportedly caused by an electrical spark.
A security guard, trained in firefighting, was rushed to the university clinic after suffering from smoke inhalation while attempting to contain the flames.
SolaceBase reports that firefighters from both the Kano State Fire Service and the Federal Fire Service responded promptly, preventing the fire from spreading further.

Confirming the incident, the Director of Kano State Fire Service, Sani Anas, said that the situation was brought under control before it could escalate to other sections of the building.
Also, the University Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa, acknowledged said while the fire had been successfully extinguished, the full extent of the damage was yet to be determined.

“We cannot quantify the losses at this time, but we are thankful that no lives were lost,” he stated.
He further highlighted the university’s policy requiring all electrical appliances to be switched off at the end of the day to enhance safety, reduce energy consumption, and lower costs.
“Routine inspections are carried out to ensure compliance across all departments,” Kurawa added.
