Gov Yusuf approves reversion of Yusuf Maitama Sule University to Northwest University Kano

The Kano State Executive Council on Friday approved the reversion of Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano (YUMSUK) to its original name, Northwest University Kano.

The Council presided over by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf said this decision aligns with the university’s founding purpose when it was established in 2012.

In addition, the council approved an extension of the retirement age for academic staff in state-owned institutions.

SolaceBase reports that Professors will now retire at 70 years instead of 65, while other academic staff in higher institutions will retire at 65 raised from 60 years.

To honour the legacy of the late Dr Yusuf Maitama Sule (Danmasani Kano), the council also announced the change of name of Ghari College of Education and Advanced Studies to Yusuf Maitama Sule College of Education and Advanced Studies, Ghari.

This institution is expected to significantly enhance teacher training and advanced studies in the state.

The college is modelled after other established institutions, such as Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso College of Education in Tudun Wada, Audu Bako College in Dambatta, and Mallam Aminu Kano College (Legal).

It will serve as a symbol of respect and remembrance for the late elder statesman, joining the list of educational institutions named after prominent figures from Kano.

These resolutions were made during the council’s 21st sitting on Friday, November 29, 2024 (27th Jumada Al-Awwal 1446).

The State Commissioner for Higher Education, Dr Yusuf Ibrahim Kofarmata,  announced this through his official social media account.
