Prof. Haruna Musa clinches BUK VC seat in dominant win

Professor Haruna Musa of the Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry has emerged as the chosen new Vice Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano (BUK) after securing an overwhelming 853 votes, setting a new chapter in the university’s leadership.

The keenly contested election showcased the intellectual strength and democratic spirit of BUK, with five respected academics vying for the prestigious seat.

Professor Haruna Musa stood out with a commanding lead on Tuesday, leaving his closest contender, Professor Mahmoud Umar Sani, trailing with 367 votes.

The third position went to Professor Muhammad Sani Gumel, who polled 364 votes, followed by Professor Adamu Idris Tanko with 161 votes, while Professor Muhammad Bashir Fagge garnered 18 votes.

Professor Musa’s emergence was met with widespread celebration among staff, students, and the academic community who see in him a leader with vision, experience, and integrity.

Known for his brilliance in the sciences and dedication to academic excellence, the newly elected VC is expected to bring transformative leadership to BUK at a time the institution seeks to consolidate its place among Africa’s leading universities.

The  Electoral Committee was chaired by Professor Muhtari Ali Hajara.

In a demonstration of unity and maturity, Professor Sani Muhammad Gumel, one of the candidates, expressed satisfaction with the process and pledged his full support to Prof. Musa. “The election was fair, transparent, and credible. The result clearly indicates the direction of the University community,” he stated.

Professor Rukayyatu Ahmed Rufa’i, former Minister of Education, and Professor Abdalla Uba Adamu,  former Vice-Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) congratulated the Vice-Chancellor for steering BUK through five transformative years. They praised the transparent and inclusive process and urged continued cooperation among the University’s academic leadership.

However, the final ratification and selection will be conducted by the visitor of the university, that is, President Bola Tinubu and a letter of appointment will be issued by the Minister of Education.
