At just 19, Kano-based innovator, Khalifa Aminu is developing a technology that could one day allow household appliances to be controlled directly with human thoughts—without any surgical procedures.
Born and raised in Gobirawa Quarters, Dala Local Government Area, Khalifa showed a remarkable curiosity and inventive streak from a very young age, experimenting with devices even before he began formal education.
That early fascination with technology has grown into a passion for creating solutions that blend practicality with innovation.
Speaking with SolaceBase, Khalifa explained that he is currently designing a special cap fitted with electrodes that capture electrical signals from the brain.
He stated that, “These signals are then interpreted by a microcontroller. The idea is to eventually control devices like lights, fans, and televisions using only thought.”
He further added, “Many people assume the only way to connect the brain with a computer is through surgery, like Neuralink.

“But I discovered that the brain’s electrical signals can be picked up from the surface of the head without any invasive procedure. My goal is to one day switch on a fan or a TV just by thinking about it.”
Though the technology is still in development, Khalifa’s work has already drawn admiration from the public, who describe it as a remarkable leap for African youth in technology.
Khalifa’s creativity extends beyond this project. He previously developed glasses for the visually impaired that alert wearers when they approach obstacles, as well as a Hausa-speaking robot, which showcased his ability to merge technological innovation with practical and cultural solutions.
His talent recently caught the attention of Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who recognized Khalifa’s potential and provided financial support to help him continue his experiments and innovations.
Khalifa said, “I want the world to see that great ideas can come from Africa. This is just the beginning. I hope my work encourages other young people to think creatively, experiment boldly, and believe in their ability to change the future.”
