A tragedy unfolded in the Yamadawa community of Gwale Local Government Area, in Kano State, where a young man, Abdullateef Muhammad, was fatally beaten by residents who wrongly accused him of theft.
Abdullateef had just stepped out early Tuesday morning for prayers when neighbours suddenly shouted “thief!” mistaken for a criminal, he was chased and violently attacked by a mob in the neighbourhood.
His wife, Habiba, spoke to SolaceBase about the terrifying morning.
According to her, ‘’i heard the alarming shouts soon after my husband left home. When he didn’t return and his phone was unreachable, i feared the worst.
Borrowing a neighbour’s phone around 7 a.m., she tried again to reach him without success. Soon after, she was told that a man matching her husband’s description had been severely beaten and taken to a nearby junction.

Arriving at the scene, Habiba said her husband was barely recognizable due to the brutal assault and identified only by his clothes. She also learned his phone had been taken during the attack.
“I couldn’t even recognize him. They beat him badly, took his belongings, and dragged him to the junction. I want justice for my husband,” she pleaded.
A resident who wished to remain anonymous confirmed it was a case of mistaken identity and expressed shock that neighbours failed to identify their own.
“When she showed me his photo, we went to the junction. She started crying immediately. It’s painful to think the community couldn’t recognize Abdullateef,” the resident said.
The Ward Head, Ahmad Badamasi, confirmed the young man’s death and said the police have launched an investigation.
SolaceBase contacted the Kano Police Command’s spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, who said he would provide more details after reaching out to the police station in the area and gathering full information.
