Human rights group urges Kano residents to track lawmakers’ constituency projects

The Resource Center for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED) has called on Kano residents to monitor constituency projects in their local governments to ensure effective execution and accountability.

This call was made by CHRICED’s Executive Director, Ibrahim M. Zikirullahi, on Thursday in Wudil Local Government during a community accountability report-back forum for the Kano South Senatorial District.

Mr. Zikirullahi, represented by Senior Program Officer Omoniyi Adewoye, explained that the forum aimed to provide a platform for people to share and discuss issues of corruption and accountability within their communities.

He expressed concern about corruption hindering Nigeria’s progress.

He criticised the government’s spending priorities, highlighting neglected schools and hospitals while funding unnecessary projects.

He urged people to question how the Nigerian budget is allocated and spent.

Malam Abubakar Jibril, Assistant Commissioner of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for Kano and Jigawa, emphasized the ICPC’s openness to receiving petitions from the public.

He encouraged people to break the silence by reporting corruption to the ICPC. He commended CHRICED for educating citizens about their rights and urged continued monitoring of politicians’ performance and constituency project execution.

Aminu Bashir, representing the Kano office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), stressed the importance of providing accurate information without lies when submitting petitions or lodging complaints.

He reiterated the EFCC’s commitment to pursuing corrupt individuals.
