ICPC now targets cyber crime, money laundering- Chairman

The Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, has disclosed that the Commission has expanded its prosecutorial mandate to include cybercrime, money laundering, and illicit financial flows.

He made this known last week during a panel session at the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Mentorship Committee’s Welcome Program for Young Lawyers, held at the NBA Secretariat in Abuja.

SolaceBase reports that Dr. Aliyu, who was appointed the 5th Chairman of the ICPC in 2023, said the new focus areas are part of the Commission’s broader strategy to strengthen anti-corruption enforcement through both prosecution and preventive measures.

“So far, we have been able to focus on restorative justice, specifically asset recovery of proceeds of crime, expanding the prosecution mandates of the Commission to include money laundering, illicit financial flows and cybercrimes,” he said.

He added that under his leadership, the Commission is working to improve transparency and efficiency through digitisation.

“The Commission is being more transparent by keeping its website active with daily activities and digitising case management and reporting systems to reduce bureaucracy and speed up the work process,” he said.

Dr. Aliyu further explained that prevention is just as important as enforcement, noting that involving state Attorneys-General and the media in anti-corruption efforts has proven to be effective in curbing systemic abuse and saving public funds.

While acknowledging the structural challenges in the public service, he said the shortcomings cannot be blamed on human resources alone, as performance varies across institutions and levels of government.

Dr. Aliyu’s remarks reflect the Commission’s evolving approach to corruption, moving beyond traditional case handling to include digital systems, financial crime tracking, and inter-agency collaboration.
