In Defence of Purposeful Youth Leadership: The case of Dr. Dahiru Muhammad Hashim-Nuraddeen Danjuma

By Nuraddeen Danjuma

In times when Nigeria yearns for upright, visionary, and committed youth leaders, it is regrettable that unwarranted attacks are often directed at those who strive to make a difference. One such case is the recent barrage of allegations leveled against Dr. Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change in Kano State.

These accusations, especially when unsubstantiated, do more harm than good; not just to the individuals involved, but to our collective effort to inspire good governance through young, energetic, and morally upright leaders.

Dr. Dahiru is not a stranger to responsibility or hard work. As someone who had the privilege of observing his dedication up close; particularly during his time as the Project Coordinator for the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (AcReSAL) project in Kano. I can testify to his exceptional work ethic and unrelenting commitment to community-centered development.

In less than a year as Commissioner, he has tackled several long-standing environmental and development issues:

Water Intervention: Through AcReSAL and other platforms, Dr. Dahiru provided clean water to numerous communities, some of which had suffered over 40 years without a reliable source. This goes beyond policy—it is practical humanitarianism.

Land Reclamation & Livelihoods: Under his watch, degraded lands were restored and made productive again. He facilitated soft loans and support for farmers and small-scale entrepreneurs to enhance agricultural productivity and local livelihoods.

Healthcare and Education Outreach: The commissioner facilitated medical outreach programs in underserved communities and distributed essential educational materials to schoolchildren, a gesture that shows his multi-sectoral concern for human development.

Waste Management Reform: A once-dormant waste management sector in Kano has been reinvigorated through timely intervention, debt payment to workers, and restructuring efforts that restored dignity and functionality to the agency.

Policy Development: His hands-on role in finalising the Kano State Climate Change Policy, which is set for launch, is a major policy milestone that will shape climate governance in the state for years to come.

So, why then must such a leader be dragged down by unproven accusations?

Youth leadership is often a tough terrain in Nigerian politics—fraught with skepticism, unrealistic expectations, and at times, deliberate sabotage. Dr. Dahiru’s case is emblematic of the struggles of many young Nigerians in public office who must work twice as hard to prove themselves while also defending their character against baseless allegations.

Constructive criticism is healthy in any democracy. However, accusations without evidence—especially against individuals actively delivering on their mandates—are both demoralizing and unjust. Instead of tearing them down, let us encourage, mentor, and hold them accountable through fair and ethical means.

To Dan Bello and others who choose to publicly castigate, may I suggest: redirect your energy into offering solutions, engaging with policies, and evaluating performance based on facts, not sentiment or political undercurrents. Our collective future depends on building, not breaking.

Dr. Dahiru Muhammad Hashim represents a new generation of leaders—visionary, proactive, and connected to grassroots realities. Rather than vilify him, let us rally around such profiles to ensure that competent leadership becomes the rule, not the exception.
