International Midwives Day: Kano NANNM chair applauds midwives’ resilience, calls for better welfare
As the world marks International Midwives Day, the Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Kano State Council, Dr. Ibrahim Maikarfi has paid glowing tribute to midwives across Nigeria, describing them as the “diamonds of the health sector” and the “gold standard” in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality.
In a goodwill message sent to SolaceBase on Monday to commemorate the occasion, Dr. Maikarfi praised midwives for their resilience, resourcefulness, readiness, and ability to act swiftly to save lives, despite the many professional and systemic challenges they face.

“You are wonderful because, in spite of the mounting crises—ranging from economic hardship, poor remuneration, inadequate job security, work overload due to human resource shortages, insecurity, and lack of medical equipment—you remain unwavering in your commitment to service,” he said.
Describing midwives as internationally recognized and scientifically grounded healthcare professionals, he emphasized the critical role they play during health emergencies and routine care alike.

“Your services are indispensable in every crisis. You bring life, perfect life, and sustain life. You are truly a golden and dear professional group,” Dr. Maikarfi stated.
He urged stakeholders and government authorities to prioritize the welfare and working conditions of midwives, noting that such investments are key to achieving improved maternal and child health outcomes in the country.
