Kaduna govt confirms attack on Emir’s convoy, says no lives lost

The Kaduna State Government has confirmed the attack on the official vehicle of the Emir of Birnin Gwari, Alhaji Zubairu Mai Gawri II, on Tuesday evening.

The Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Mr Samuel Aruwan confirmed the attack in a statement issued on Wednesday in Kaduna.

He said that the emir was not in the vehicle when it was attacked, adding that no life was lost.

“According to the reports, on Monday, March 15, at about 4:30 PM, the official vehicle of the Emir of Birnin Gwari was shot at by bandits around the Zonkoro axis of the Kaduna-Birnin Gwari road, within Chikun local government area.

“Only the driver, Umar Jibrin, and an Orderly, Inspector Sani Yahaya, were in the vehicle, on their way to Kaduna.

“The Emir was in Kaduna at the time of the attack.

“No life was lost, and the Emirate Council relayed details of the incident to the Kaduna State Government,” he added.

Meanwhile, the commissioner said some armed robbers who barricaded a bridge leading to Kitansa village in Kauru LGA had shot one person dead and injured another.

Similarly, armed bandits barricaded the Buruku-Mando road in LGA and opened fire on vehicles plying the road, during which a resident of Lema area in Mando, was killed.

Aruwan said, on Tuesday in Kiffin Chawai District, Kauru Local Government Area, troops of Operation Safe Haven rescued two travelers, who were attacked by a mob in the area.

“The two persons were on their way from Bassa Local Government Area in Plateau State, to Marwa village in Bakin Kogi, Kauru LGA, when they were intercepted by the youths who attempted to lynch them.

“The timely intervention of the troops prevented this, and the two travelers were duly rescued.”

He said in another incident, the troops also apprehended a suspected bandit informant at Apyimbuu village, Zangon Kataf local government area.

“The suspect has been handed over to the Police for further investigation,” he added.

The commissioner also disclosed that troops of Operation Thunder Strike had killed two bandits during a raid on their Rafin Rikamba camp in Chikun LGA.

“Other bandits are suspected to have escaped with gunshot wounds.

“A kidnapped truck driver escaped from the bandits during the raid.”

Aruwan also said police personnel had intercepted two brothers from Toro in Bauchi State, along the Kaduna-Saminaka road with 150 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition concealed in the door of their vehicle.

He explained that the suspects had allegedly confessed to supplying ammunition to three previously arrested suspects who were nabbed in late February from Plateau.

The ammunition was to be supplied to one Usman aka Gurgu in Kaduna State, he said.

“The trio were arrested with 1,565 rounds of ammunition on February 28.

“Following that, two suspects, father and son were arrested in Karahi as part of the same syndicate. They were in possession of 231 rounds.

“The most recently arrested suspects attempted to escape, and in the process, one suspect was fatally wounded and was confirmed dead in hospital, while one was injured on his right leg.

“Efforts to arrest other members of the gang are ongoing.”

Aruwan said Gov. Nasir El-Rufai had sympathised with the Emir of Birnin Gwari over the attack on his vehicle.

He also sent condolences to the families of those killed by bandits and prayed for the repose of the victims’ souls.

The governor commended the troops for the successes recorded in the clearance operations. (NAN)
