Kano: 20 chairmanship, councillorship aspirants test positive for drugs – NDLEA

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has said that About 20 chairmanship and councillorship aspirants in Kano State have tested positive for multiple drugs during screening for the upcoming local government elections.

NDLEA’s Commander in the state, Abubakar Idris Ahmad, said the aspirants presented themselves for the screening as a condition to be able to contest in the forthcoming local government election in the state tested positive for substances including opioids, hemp benzodiazepines and nicotine.

Mr Ahmad noted that while no female aspirant had tested positive so far, the screening process was ongoing and that more candidates were expected to be tested before the final verification by the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC).

Recalls that KANSIEC had scheduled the elections for October 26, 2024, where 44 chairmanship and 484 councillorship positions will be contested.
