Kano accountability group vows to strengthen oversight in public fund utilisation

The Kano State Led Accountability Mechanism (KANSLAM) has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting transparency and ensuring the responsible use of funds in public sectors, particularly in healthcare and education.

This was stated by the Co-chairperson representing the Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Hajiya Maimuna Muhammad Yakubu, during a media briefing on Tuesday in Kano organized by KANSLAM, with support from Pathfinder, focusing on health sector accountability.

She emphasised that KANSLAM’s objective is not to target or blame anyone but rather to promote accountability and transparency in the management of public funds.

She highlighted how KANSLAM has successfully influenced critical decisions on budget allocations in the state through advocacy efforts directed at relevant stakeholders.

The event, which brought together stakeholders from the health sector, marked the first of its kind. Health sector representatives in Kano expressed their commitment to upholding accountability to improve healthcare services.

During the briefing, the Director General of the Private Health Institutions Management Agency (PHIMA), Professor Salisu Ahmed, expressed his agency’s willingness to collaborate with the media to ensure transparency and accountability.

He assured that his agency is always open to inquiries and clarifications from journalists for the overall benefit of the health sector in Kano.

Additionally, the Director of Kano State Public Health Department, Dr. Imam Wada Bello, encouraged journalists to thoroughly verify information before publishing or broadcasting. He also urged them to establish mutual trust with government officials to facilitate easier access to information, which would enhance their work.
