ACReSAL distributes working materials to self-help groups in Kano

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf has admonished self-help groups given working implements for clearing drainages not to sell them but rather use them for the purpose it was meant.

Gov. Yusuf stated this on Thursday at the Government House during the free distribution of working implement provided by Kano Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) to enhance drainage clearance so as to check flooding in the state.

The governor represented by his Chief of Staff, Alhaji Shehu Wada Sagagi urged the beneficiaries to see the opportunity of the working tools as a government measure to support their efforts of cleanliness of their environment that will also check the spread of communicable diseases.

‘’The working tools provided for you by the government should not be sold and misused. Let us always see government property or support as our own because the money used on the purchase of the implements are public funds, Sagagi said.

SOLACEBASE reports that the working tools distributed include Wheelbarrows, cutlasses, Rakes, Rain boots, hand gloves, shovels, Diggers, and Face Caps among others.

In a remark, Kano ACReSAL Project Coordinator, Dr. Dahir Muhammad Hashim, said the aim of the distribution of working implement to the interest groups is to support them in efforts to prevent flooding in the eight metropolitan local government areas of the state with clearance of drainages with the tools.

According to Hashim, ACReSAL is a tripartite Project of the World Bank, Federal Government, and Kano State Government among the nineteen northern states.

‘’The Project is to increase the implementation of sustainable landscape management practices in targeted watersheds in northern Nigeria and strengthen Nigeria’s long-term enabling environment for integrated climate-resilient landscape management, ‘’Hashim said.

On his part, Chairman of Self Help Groups in Kano, Alhaji Ibrahim Aminu Garba Kofar-Nai’sa urged members of the interest group to always notify the state Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB) whenever they intend to carry out voluntary activities so that the debris from the drainages can be packed immediately by the organization.

‘’There is a process we normally follow to ensure smooth and seamless operations of the clearance work. We normally inform REMASAB so that they are carried along in the conduct of the clearance to fast-track the activities if not so, the debris from the drainages packed aside would subsequently fall back into the gutters whenever they are not packed in good time, ”Kofar-Nai’sa added.

The chairman noted that five self-help groups were selected as beneficiaries of the tools from the eight metropolitan local governments.
