The Kano State House of Assembly has urged the state government to warn Kano electricity distribution company (KEDCO) against disconnecting transformers without notice.
Usman Abubakar Tasi’u, an assembly member representing Kiru constituency, who moved the motion, said KEDCO has disconnected and removed 150-170 transformers from Kiru Bebeji, Tudun Wada, Rogo and Karaye local government areas.

He stressed that while most of the transformers were purchased by individuals and communities, KEDCO does not adhere to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission Law 2023 which provides a 12-day notice before disconnection of transformers.
“In most cases, individuals and communities pay for transformers and their maintenance but in the end, the company does not provide adequate electricity and total disconnection of the transformers in some areas,” he said.
The lawmaker, however, urged the state government to set up a committee that would discuss with KEDCO for possible reconnection of the affected areas.

Another member representing Ungoggo, Aminu Sa’adu pointed out that the motion by Usman is the third of its kind as there were similar efforts during the 8th and 9th assemblies on the need for improved power supply.
“The state government should intensify efforts to change the current situation which is a major setback,” he said.
After deliberations, the assembly through its speaker, speaker Jibril Isma’il Falgore, recommended that the state government mandate KEDCO to stop disconnecting transformers without notice.
