WED: Kano begins initiative to restore over 10,000 degraded lands

Kano State Government has said efforts are underway to restore over 10,000 hectares of degraded lands in the state as a measure to ensure food security.

Kano ACRESAL Project Coordinator, Dr Dahir M. Hashim announced this on Wednesday during a visit to FAO  intervention site, Gumawa, Gabasawa local government area, Kano State as part of activities to mark World Environment Day (WED) together with the state Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.

Hashim said Nigeria during the administration of Muhammadu Buhari made a commitment at a climate change conference in Madrid to reclaim 4 million degraded lands out of which ACRESAL Project pledged to restore one million out of the commitment made by the federal government.

‘’Through the ACReSAL Project, an MoU was signed between the United Nations agency, Food and Agriculture Organisation and ACReSAL Project to restore 350,000 degraded land within the 19 northern states including the FCT,’’ Hashim said.

He said the training of operators to use the Delfino plough machine, a specialized tool for land preparation, was carried out in Kano with operators from 11 northern states by the national office of ACReSAL and the Food and Agriculture Organisation, FAO.

According to him, Kano is the only state out of the 36 states to have been able to recover over 200 hectares of degraded land since the commencement of the initiative two months ago.

The ACReSAL Project Coordinator noted that with the theme of this year’s World Environment Day, “Land restoration, stopping desertification and building drought resilience”, Kano is ahead of any other state in the country with efforts to restore degraded land that will be distributed to farmers immediately the land is restored to enhance farming.

He appreciated the support of the governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf and the Environment Commissioner towards achieving the goals of the project.

On his part, the Commissioner for Environment, Alhaji Nasir Sule Garo said the World Environment Day set aside by the United Nations every 5th June World Environment Day (WED) to encourage awareness and action for the protection of the environment.

Garo expressed satisfaction with the commitment of ACReSAI towards the restoration of degraded land while assuring support of the ministry for the actualization of the project goals.
