Kano Central Senatorial election: NNPP vows to reclaim mandate

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) Kano State on Tuesday vowed to reclaim its mandate in the just-concluded Kano Central Senatorial election.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared a former Kano State Governor, Sen. Ibrahim Shekarau, who had decamped from the party to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the Kano Central Senatorial election.

The NNPP Secretary, Hamisu Sadi Ali said in a statement made available to newsmen in Kano on Tuesday that already the legal team of the party had commenced processes to claim the mandate.

He expressed surprise that in spite of court orders directing the commission to replace Shekarau’s name who officially withdrew his candidature and decamped from the party, INEC went ahead to declare the former governor winner instead of its candidate, Rufai Hanga in the Saturday’s election.

“It is evidentially clear that Ibrahim Shekarau has officially decamped from the New Nigeria Peoples Party to PDP and he has also withdrawn his candidature through correspondence to INEC and the party in compliance with the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended),

“We had  conducted primary election within 14 days as stipulated by the Electoral Act after informing INEC of our decision to do so which produced Sen. Hanga as a flagbearer representing Kano Central Senatorial District.

“We are however appealing to our teaming supporters, across the state to remain calm, as our legal team has commenced processes to claim our mandate,” Ali said. (NAN)
