Kano develops drainage master plan to strengthen urban resilience
The Kano State Government, under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, is intensifying efforts to promote a cleaner environment, enhance urban resilience, and improve stormwater management across the state.
The State Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr Dahiru M. Hashim, stated this on Wednesday in a statement.
Dr Hashim said he recently conducted inspection visits to the Giginyu, Badawa, and Ladanai communities in Nasarawa local government area, to assess the progress of drainage interventions being executed by the ministry.

“Upon completion, these drainage projects will significantly reduce flooding, which has continued to pose serious threats to lives, property, and critical infrastructure, particularly during the peak of the rainy season,” he explained.

SolaceBase reports that the commissioner noted that, beyond these site-specific interventions, the State Government is actively developing a comprehensive State Drainage Master Plan.

According to Dr Hashim, the strategic framework is designed to provide a coordinated, data-driven approach to urban drainage development, ensuring that all current and future infrastructure projects are technically sound, resilient to climate change, and aligned with rapid urbanization demands.
He further called on residents to take collective responsibility in protecting public assets.
“We urge all residents of Kano State to refrain from indiscriminate disposal of waste into drainage channels and to support routine desilting efforts.
This will allow for the free flow of stormwater and ensure the long-term sustainability of our infrastructure,” Dr. Hashim said.
The ministry emphasized that the successful implementation of these projects will help reduce flooding risks, safeguard communities, and strengthen the state’s overall environmental resilience.
