A concerned Kano resident, Alhaji Abdussalami Muhammad Yaro, has written an open letter to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, appealing for the urgent hearing and resolution of the lingering emirship dispute in Kano State, warning that continued delays could spark unrest.

This was contained in a letter titled “Urgent Appeal for Expedited Hearing in the Kano Emirship Appeal to Avert Impending Crisis,” dated June 12, 2025, and made available to journalists in Kano on Thursday.

SolaceBase reports that in the letter, Alhaji Yaro expressed deep anxiety over the unresolved tussle for the Emir of Kano’s throne, describing it as a ticking time bomb that could destabilize not just the state but also affect national peace.

He noted that, unlike the Gwandu Emirate dispute, which took two decades to resolve, the Kano case involves two rival claimants both residing within the city, making the situation dangerously volatile.

“The delay in conclusively resolving the substantive appeal pending before the Supreme Court is not merely procedural,” Yaro warned, adding that the state is gripped by growing tension between the two factions, each commanding significant public followership.

He highlighted several concerns stemming from the delay, including the risk of violence, stalled local governance, and eroding public trust in the judiciary.

“Any breakdown in law and order in Kano, Nigeria’s most populous state, could have devastating and far-reaching consequences,” he said.

Yaro urged the Chief Justice to use her office to prioritise the appeal, direct the Supreme Court Registry to fast-track proceedings, and ensure the matter is scheduled for hearing as soon as possible.

“Kano people stand at a precipice,” the letter stated. “A swift, definitive and legally sound resolution from the highest court in the land is the most potent antidote to the poison of division and threat of violence.”

He concluded by calling on all well-meaning Nigerians to help spread the message, noting that he does not use social media and hopes the letter reaches the attention of relevant authorities and the media.

Alhaji Yaro also prayed for peace in Kano and Nigeria, calling on Allah to guide the judiciary in ensuring justice and stability.
