Kano: Getting the ground good for Gawuna and Garo- Bala Ibrahim

Activities in Kano, Nigeria’s oldest commercial centre, were brought to a standstill yesterday, Sunday, 20th Nov. 2022, as a result of a planned one million man march, organized to galvanize support for the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Although the march was organized to mobilize supporters on the need for them to have their PVC ready, and the target was estimated to be one million people, the crowd that turned out tripled that estimate. Even the governor, His Excellency, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, was tickled pink by what he saw.

“You can see that, we promised one million PVC’s show walk, but the event has turned to three million, a situation that indicated that the state is for APC’s presidential candidate in 2023”-Ganduje.

Indeed the state look set to support the APC’s presidential candidate in the general elections of next year, but from that show of political strength, Kano is also making another strong statement, i.e, the ground is good for Gawuna and Garo, to get ready for the Government House. All indicators are pointing in that direction, for reasons that have bearings with merit.

Yes, Dr. Nasir Gawuna, the present Deputy Governor of Kano state, and the APC gubernatorial candidate for the 2023 election, has excelled as a man with the quality of being particularly good in public administration, and one that deserves the trust of the electorates, in the pursuit for the development of Kano state.

For those that are unfamiliar with Kano, or lacking the knowledge and awareness of Dr. Nasiru Gawuna’s performance in the various positions he held, they may be quick to classify these comments as those of a flatterer, or a sycophant, that is lavishing praises on Gawuna insincerely. But I would take solace in the famous proverb that says, actions speak louder than words, whose ambition is to let people’s words teach, and their actions speak for them.

It is on record that, in his entire sojourn in politics, particularly the politics of Kano state, Gawuna has been acting in accordance with the meaning and expectations of excellence, thereby giving explanation to the maxim that, actions are greater determinants of one’s behaviour and character.

He worked with all the three elected Governors of the state from 1999 to date, and served as the chairman of Nassarawa Local Government for 8 years, Commissioner, Ministry of Agriculture, and after the resignation of the former Deputy Governor, Professor Hafiz Abubakar in 2018, Governor Ganduje picked him as his running mate in the 2019 general elections, before he was called again, through a popular and collective consensus, to serve as the candidate of the APC, in the 2023 gubernatorial election.

Truly, people can say anything before they are put in positions of trust, but when what they say and do are contrary, it’s easier to judge by what they’ve done instead of by what they said. Gawuna had matched his words by his deeds, and now that people were called upon to march in a show of force of support, am not surprised in the slightest, at the thundering and tumultuous turnout. It is an indication that indeed, the ground is good to get the G and G into the Government House.

All things being equal, the APC in Kano State will on Wednesday, November 23, commence the governorship campaign rallies and consultations across the 44 local government areas in the state, pursuant to last week’s inauguration, of the various committees under the Gawuna/Garo Campaign Council. This would further signpost the palatable prospect of the duo of Gawuna and Garo going to the Government house.

Gawuna has a unique history, which is the history of respecting elders, the younger, and all his political associates, regardless of party differences. Such qualities are rare amongst leaders nowadays, because mostly, people’s behaviour in power are powered by the adage that, power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Yes, people in positions of power take delight in abusing their power, to the extend that they become inclined to doing bad things. Elected officials have made name in becoming corrupted, or morally compromised. Where as in others, the more authority they have, the worse their morality becomes, Gawuna has been acting in the reverse. In fact it seems, he became more humble and humane with the title of His Excellency, compared to when he was referred to as Honourable, in the office of a Commissioner.

Aside his excellent performance as the chairman, Nasarawa Local Government, to which yours truly has a tall tale to tell, according to the Chairman of a support group, Gawuna Envoy, Alhaji Kasim Musa Madigawa, “Gawuna’s track record and experience in governance right from the Grassroots up to the state level, made him remain the best candidate for the people of Kano.

Under his stewardship, many projects were introduced, among which are, the APPEALS project, whose mission is to Support the achievement of increased productivity, production, and improving processing and marketing of Rice, Tomato and Wheat, the KSADP project, which stands for Kano State Agro Pastoral Development Project, with the aim of supporting the Government’s efforts to promote inclusive economic growth in Kano State”.

So the three million man march of yesterday, as observed by His Excellency, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the Ejerukugbe of the Urogbo land, is not only a show of support for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, but a gesture with the hand, aimed at getting the ground good for Gawuna and Garo, to enter the Government House, come 2023.
